A New Goal Today! The Penny Walk.

January 7th, 2012 at 04:01 pm

I just love reading Denise's (Pennywise Meanderings) blog about how she has quit smoking. She puts a penny in a jar for every cigarette she doesn't smoke. What I have decided to do is put a penny in a jar for every 20 minutes I exercise. I want to exercise at least 40 minutes a day. I have an old (and I DO mean old) treadmill that still works and I have been using it pretty faithfully for the last month. I started this morning by walking 20 minutes so I have my first penny in my little jar!

Anyone want to join me for "The Penny Walk" ?

Just put one penny in a jar for every 20 minutes exercise you do. You can do any exercise you want! For now, mine will be walking on the trusty old treadmill. Each Saturday we will report how many pennies we have.

Oh, oh! I might just join you in this one since I really need to up my exercise! The pennies are working beautifully for the smoking cessation and I think using them to encourage exercise is a great idea, too! With all this going on, I might have to go get many rolls of pennies. Wink
By the way, I don't put a penny in the jar for every cigarette I don't smoke but for every dollar I don't spend on cigarettes. Wink If it was for every cigarette I don't smoke I'd need a dump truck! Ha ha!

I'll join you! I ususally walk from the gate to a log down the road 25 times, twice daily but I haven't done so in over a week. I've been lazy. Count me in! I guess at the end of the week I'll put a dollar in the $20 challenge for every penny in the jar.

I think that is an excellent plan. I track my calories and exercise on MyFitnessPlan, so I think I'll opt out. I might chime in with minutes exercised when you all post. I just did 35 minutes on the elliptical at the gym.

I can't do too much right now, but I am supposed to be doing my physical therapy exercises twice a day. So I think I'll modify this to putting a penny in the jar every time I do my physical therapy exercises. They take about 20 minutes each time, so I think that will work for this.

I like this idea ..I'm not sure how many pennies I have around (I have a change jar that I haven't opened in quite awhile.) I didn't do any of the exercise I wanted to do this past week ... so maybe this will help be an extra motivation. For me though, I'll earn the penny for 15 minutes of some kind of exercise - dancing to music in my living room, using my elliptical, working with my dumbbells, etc. Anything really would be better than the nothing of the past five months.

May I join in as well? I do already exercise quite a bit, but some days I feel too lazy to do so, so this will be a great incentive for those days.

I'm also thinking I'll add a nickle for every day I go without ingesting processed sugar. :-)

(And where would the Sat reporting occur? Sorry, still new to this site so not sure how these challenges work. )
