I used some elbow grease and saved over $1000.

August 15th, 2008 at 11:20 am

My kitchen floor was pretty disguesting! It is 21 year old vinyl. It was dirty to say the least. We were going to try and get it replaced in the next few months. But, you know me, I like to save $$$$. So I took a gallon jug of "Simple Green" and poured it straight on the flooring. I let it set 10-20 minutes and then took a mop to it. I almost couldn't beleive my eyes. I was able to mop the dirt up really easy, without scrubbing. It only came up when I used the Simple Green full strength. It took a lot of rinsing to get it all up. I then did a final rinse with vinegar water. Then I used clear "Future" floor finish. It looks almost new!! My floor is 12'X 22' so I saved myself almost $1500, if not more by not buying a new floor.

Simple Green is great stuff. I've even used it on stains on clothing but you can't let it dry or else it stains the clothing green lol. Found that out the hard way.

I love Simple Green too. Also, if you had had it replaced, you may have had to do asbestos remediation, due to the age of the floor. We managed to narrowly avoid that when we redid our kitchen. We chose Marmoleum flooring, because it's a great product AND could be installed over our existing floor.

You inspired me. I'm using a dollar store detergent called "Totally Awesome," cleaning one square at a time. Even though I mopped just three days ago, this stuff is transforming the look of the floor. I do a cleaning like this a couple times a year, but add no finish on top. We estimate our vinyl is 30 years old, having been installed by previous owners.
